Workshop 1

Tobacco Control

This workshop explores smoking cessation as a key strategy for reducing health inequalities, particularly among people experiencing multiple disadvantages. Framed by the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, it focuses on translating national policy into practical action for high-prevalence groups. It highlights the importance of integrated working between smoking cessation and drug and alcohol services, alongside examples of effective partnership approaches.

The session is interactive, enabling participants to identify barriers and develop practical solutions to improving access and outcomes for underserved populations

Workshop 1

Co-Occuring Conditions: Stopping the Silo

People with co-occurring mental health and substance use needs often experience fragmented care, with services operating in silos and requiring one issue to be “stabilised” before the other is addressed. This can result in repeated crises, disengagement, and poorer outcomes.

A coordinated approach recognises the interconnection between mental health and substance use and the need for integrated, trauma-informed, person-centred care. In practice, this means collaborative working across services, shared care planning, clear communication, and a focus on trust, reduced stigma, and sustained engagement—ensuring services adapt to people’s complex needs rather than expecting individuals to fit existing thresholds.

Seeds of Hope: Social Prescribing

This workshop explores how nature-based approaches can support mental health, wellbeing, and rehabilitation through collaboration with Greener On the Outside For Prisons and the Women’s Lead within His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service. The session will also examine how Social and Outdoor Health (SOH) initiatives can contribute to pain management, anxiety and depression care plans, while helping reduce reliance on dependence-forming medications.
